Borgo Alba Chiara: from abandoned unfinished buildings to prestigious residenceBorgo Alba Chiara: from abandoned farmhouses to a prestigious residence
A truly unique and emotional experience: that’s the only way to describe our work on the Borgo Alba Chiara in Toscolano Maderno, located on the western shore of Lake Garda.
This residence emerged from the meticulous restoration of a historic 16th-century medieval building, preserving its original structural elements and most authentic features, offering guests a chance to step back in time while staying by the beautiful Lake Garda.
From the very first visit, we were captivated by the beauty and history of this abandoned farmhouse complex, which evoked a deep emotional connection. The long period of neglect, with minimal alterations over time, led to the discovery of numerous historical and decorative elements, many of which were striking and evocative. Among these were countless shrines, icons, Madonnas, and other sacred elements.
We quickly realized the uniqueness of this borgo, nestled at the foot of Mount Pizzoccolo, at the edge of the town’s historic center, and just a few steps away from free, swimmable beaches. We envisioned something more for this place than simply a residential space—it needed to share its history and beauty with as many people as possible. And so, Borgo Alba Chiara was born in Toscolano: a tourist residence that embodies the poetry and charm of this exceptional location.
A modern project with a loving gaze toward the past
Our involvement went beyond just the architectural restoration; we also played a role in shaping a complete tourist destination, managing the entire structure with the support of a tourism sector partner.
The design process began with a thorough analysis of the area, aimed at uncovering forgotten historical elements and guiding the intervention on the existing buildings. This research led to the discovery of numerous treasures, such as the wooden coffered ceilings dating back to the first half of the 16th century- true gems of the building’s history, skillfully restored.
We focused on preserving these historical features while integrating modern amenities for comfort and efficiency to create a unique, welcoming atmosphere. The votive niches and various works of art discovered during the research and restoration were placed in the apartments, giving life to a refined and captivating environment.
Special attention was given to the external finishes, with lighting that enhanced the building’s unique characteristics. The swimming pools were placed on two existing terraces, with restored stone walls, replanted native plants, and the addition of yellow climbing roses.
Each building in the borgo retained its identity and features, with facades that showcased the natural beauty of local stones, restored using traditional techniques.
Inside, the fusion of authenticity and comfort took center stage. Elements of the past—stone walls, brick vaults, terracotta floors, wooden beams, and frescoed coffered ceilings—harmoniously blend with today’s modern services and conveniences.
